Many principal contractors insist on full PPE for all trades on a site now, and this usually includes:

  • Safety, steel toe cap boots.
  • Gripper gloves or gloves designed for a specific use.
  • Ear protection when working with loud power tools.
  • Goggles for eye protection.
  • Hard hat.
  • Hi-viz workwear.

PPE should be the last line of defence, though. The fundamental principle of Health and Safety is to establish a safe working environment where staff do not have to rely on PPE. However, the construction industry is inherently dangerous, and employees face numerous minor and major injuries, making the use of PPE customary. PPE and health and safety documents are vital to creating a secure working environment.

The Bare Essential H&S Documents for M&E Include:

Company Health and Safety Policy:

If you are an employer with more than five staff members, including managers, secretaries, directors, etc. You must have a written Company Health and Safety Policy. Although a written policy only becomes legally binding when your company has at least five employees, it is always better to have a policy in place, even if it is not compulsory. The advantages of having such a policy are numerous, including enhancing your company's reputation and increasing your chances of being accepted in various supply chains. Therefore, it is advisable to consider having a policy that can help ensure your employees' safety and well-being while complying with legal obligations and industry standards.

RAMS

RAMS is an acronym for all the health and safety documentation a company must maintain except for the Company Health and Safety Policy, which is a separate document. Initially, during the early stages of implementing health and safety regulations, the primary documents submitted were Risk and Method Statements, and the term RAMS was coined. However, RAMS has evolved over time to include three main types of documents, now considered a crucial part of any company's H&S Pack. In addition to these standard documents, additional policies or statements may be required as part of the H&S Pack. The three essential documents for a RAMS Pack are:

Method statements:

A Method Statement is a crucial document that outlines safe procedures for carrying out tasks. While it may seem unnecessary to instruct someone on how to perform a task they already know how to do, a Method Statement prioritises safety by providing clear instructions on how to carry out a task with the least risk involved. A comprehensive guide on safe work systems for executing tasks should be provided by a Method Statement to ensure that workers can work safely and avoid accidents. Although it is not legal, most principal contractors require a well-drafted Method Statement. Therefore, it is essential to have a well-prepared Method Statement to ensure the safety of workers and prevent any potential hazards that may arise during the execution of a task.

Risk Assessments:

Assessing risks is a critical step in ensuring safety in any work environment. This involves identifying potential hazards and taking measures to control or reduce their impact. To effectively assess risks and implement suitable control measures, it is essential to remain alert and proactive in identifying potential hazards and taking appropriate actions to prevent them from causing harm. By staying informed, following best practices, and implementing effective control measures, we can ensure a safe and productive workplace for everyone involved.

COSHH Assessments:

COSHH stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. It is a comprehensive set of regulations designed to protect individuals from exposure to hazardous substances. These regulations require employers to identify dangerous materials and take necessary precautions to control the risks. The primary goal of COSHH is to prevent or minimise the risk of workers and the public being exposed to hazardous substances in the workplace. It is important to note that COSHH applies to many substances, including chemicals, dust, fumes, biological agents, and other dangerous materials. If a product or substance is deemed hazardous, it is advisable to replace it with a non-hazardous product that produces the same results, wherever possible. This approach can significantly reduce the risk of harm to workers and others exposed to these substances.
