Following the free method statement example, you will see that the first lines of text cover:

• The document type, in this case, is a method statement. Then, who needs to read the document, which could be all staff, all manual staff, or, in this case, plumbers. The final part of the first line describes the task that the method statement relates to, in this case, removing a bathroom suite.
• Following on from the title is a section titled 'prepared by'. I always advise that this is the company or trading name and not an individual's name. One of the reasons for this is that method statements evolve. John might write the initial document, but Martha, Jean, and Sam may edit and amend it as required over the following years.
• The final section at the top of this free method statement example simply says 'for'. The information to include here is the client or customer.  Although the document has been prepared to inform your staff how to carry out a task correctly and safely, all method statements must be site-specific. Enter your details here if the task is to be carried out in your office or premises. Enter their details if the task is to be carried out on someone else's premises or site.

Once the top section has been filled in, it's time to create an index showing the order in which tasks are to be carried out. In this case, the index is called 'scope of works,' and as you can see from the image below, there are six elements listed. There are no instructions telling people how to carry out any of the tasks on the list.

After the scope of works this free example and other method statements describe the work process in order, considering controlling hazards identified as specific to the task i  hand. As an example, if we look at item 2, we see the following text:

You can see from the above description how simple the descriptions of the tasks are; simplicity is the key to a successful method. Think of the pictorial diagrams you get with flat-pack fur iture. This is probably the simplest way to overcome language barriers and still tell people how to assemble the furniture. Another example might be a carpenter hanging a door that has three locks. The technique for fitting each of the locks would' be 'Fit as per manufacturer instructions'. There is no need to duplicate the fitting instructions or include them in a method statement.

Finally, at the end of this free method statement example is the section where you add your name, sign, and date the document to say that you are happy to submit it to contractors and employees as required.
