Factories and workshops can be hazardous environments if appropriate safety measures are not implemented. Common risks include heavy or sharp machinery, loud noise levels, cluttered spaces, manual handling, and exposure to dangerous chemicals or substances. Although the specific dangers may vary depending on the industry, adhering to the same safety protocols is crucial. You need to follow several rules for health and safety in the workshop, and regulations may vary depending on the nature of your work and the products you produce. Some of the rules that we’d recommend following include:

  • Keeping your space tidy and organised to prevent slips, trips, and falls.
  • Wearing the correct PPE or safety clothing.
  • Ensure all members of staff have completed appropriate levels of training.
  • Regularly reviewing equipment and checking for faults.
  • Completing factory risk assessments periodically.

Essential H&S Documents You Need Include;

Company Health and Safety Policy:

If your company has five or more employees, including managers, secretaries, directors, etc., then a written Company Health and Safety Policy is compulsory. However, a written policy is only legally required if your company has at least five employees. Nevertheless, having a policy can be highly beneficial for your company, even if it is not mandatory. It is advisable to consider having a policy to help your company get accepted in various supply chains.

RAMS

RAMS is an acronym for all health and safety documents, except for a Company Health and Safety Policy, which is a separate document. When H&S was in its early stages, the primary documents submitted were Risk and Method Statements, hence the term RAMS. Nowadays, RAMS includes three main types of documents along with any additional policies or starters that are part of a company-sponsored H&S Pack.

Method statements:

A Method Statement is an essential document that outlines safe procedures for carrying out tasks. At first, telling someone how to perform a task they already know how to do may seem pointless. However, a Method Statement prioritises safety, providing an operative with instructions on carrying out a task safely with the least risk. A Method Statement should provide a comprehensive guide on the safe work systems for executing tasks, ensuring that operatives work safely and avoid accidents. Interestingly, although it is not a legal requirement, it is a prerequisite for most principal contractors.

Risk Assessments:

To ensure safety in any situation, it is essential to assess the risks involved and take appropriate measures to eliminate or reduce them to safe levels. This crucial process involves identifying potential hazards and implementing control measures to mitigate their impact.

Overall, the key to practical risk assessment and control is to remain vigilant and proactive in identifying potential hazards and taking appropriate action to prevent them from causing harm. By staying informed, following best practices, and implementing effective control measures, we can ensure a safe and productive workplace for everyone involved.

COSHH Assessments:

COSHH, an acronym for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health, is a set of regulations that protect people from exposure to hazardous substances. These regulations require employers to identify products or substances that threaten people's health and take steps to control the risks. The primary objective of COSHH is to prevent or minimise the exposure of workers and the public to hazardous substances in the workplace. It is important to note that COSHH applies to many substances, including chemicals, dust, fumes, biological agents, and other hazardous materials. If a product or substance is found dangerous, it is recommended to substitute it with a non-hazardous product that achieves the same results, wherever possible. This will help minimise the risk of harm to workers and others exposed to these substances.
