Course format:
Three video training modules, with a multiple-choice section at the end of each module.
Entry requirements: Anyone can complete this course, whether they have previous experience or not.

This is a three-module asbestos-awareness course.

  • Module 1 explains what asbestos and asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are, their historical uses and why asbestos became widespread. It describes the microscopic nature of asbestos fibres and stresses that disturbing ACMs can release invisible airborne fibres.
  • Module 2 covers the health consequences of exposure, including mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer, asbestosis and pleural plaques. These conditions may not appear until decades after exposure and can be incurable or fatal.
  • textured coatings, floor tiles, adhesives, water tanks, fire-resistant doors, soffits, gutters and numerous older domestic and industrial products.

If suspected asbestos is found, the document instructs workers to stop immediately, isolate the area, avoid cleaning or disturbing it, report it to the responsible person and treat the material as asbestos until professionally assessed.

The central message is: never disturb suspected asbestos. This awareness course does not qualify anyone to inspect, sample, remove or work with ACMs; those activities require appropriately trained and, where applicable, licensed specialists
