Our customers feedback are a testimony to the value of our products.

Falls from height and things falling from height are among the most common accident causes in the fenestration industry. Fitters often work at first floor level or above and at roof height for soffit and fascia work.

Due to the weight of composite doors and the wind load that glazed units can be exposed to, manual handling is another area that poses high risk of accident and injury.

Slips, trips and falls on the same level are common place and the risk increases if a person is working from the outside on uneven ground.

Occupational hazards include hearing loss from loud power tools, and occupational diseases include dermatitis from sealants contacting skin and asbestos related diseases if asbestos is accidently disturbed.

This falls into two sections. The H&S you are required to have by law, and the H&S principal contractors insist you have before carrying out work for them. A principal contractor can demand any document they wish, and you either have to supply it if you want to work for them or you loose out to a competitor.

As a legal requirement you will need risk assessments, COSHH assessments and a company H&S policy if you employ more than four people.

As a bare minimum, most CDM sites ask for method statements as well and then you may also be asked for such things as equality and diversity policies, staff training records, lone worker policies and PAT test records.

In this package we include relevant risk assessments, method statements and COSHH assessments but not the company H&S policy.

The reason a Company H&S policy is omitted is because it’s not specifically relevant to a particular task. Instead it’s a stand alone document that covers your general approach to H&S within your company and who is responsible for what.

Because so many fitters work at height, training for this in your sector is considered high priority alongside asbestos awareness training. Manual handling and slip, trips and falls should also be considered.

Some of the most important staff training isn’t about being in a classroom environment or taking an online course. It’s about keeping your staff up to date on specific site rules and what’s expected of them. If management implement a control measure of wearing suede gauntlets to removing existing window panes, yet don’t pass this information on to the workers, it’s just a paperwork exercise.

Likewise, if someone is seen using ladders in a way that is considered dangerous, the staff need to know why and how to use them safely, so safety fliers could be handed out or a toolbox talk conducted.
