Working on properties that were built pre-2000 carries the inherent risk of disturbing asbestos containing materials. This needs to be highlighted for plumbers and gas fitters, as asbestos was used for firestopping and heat insulation. It was common to have an asbestos cement backboard for a boiler, airing cupboard lined with asbestos cement panels and heating pipes sprayed with asbestos insulation.

Asbestos should not be disturbed, and if there is an accidental release of particles the victims see no injury. They don’t need to see a first aider or go to hospital for immediate treatment so often the incident doesn’t get reported. In fact the severity of disturbing asbestos and the reporting methods can deter tradespeople from reporting accidental release.

Asbestos exposure can cause occupational diseases along with exposure to solvents, adhesives, biological waste and lead from removing or working with old pipework. Occupational diseases are also a threat from rodents in contaminated water, bacteria’s, fungi, mould and viruses.

As well as occupational hazards plumbers and gas fitters are also exposed to construction risks such as hand arm vibration, falls from height, working in confined spaces, Manual handling, RSIs, hand injuries, eye injuries and hearing loss.

Health and safety over the past ten years or so has seemed to turn into an everlasting piece of string that you can never get to the end of. You submit your risk assessments only to be told that you need an anti-slavery policy in place before you can fit a new bath.

There are some H&S documents that you need by law and others that are requested by organisations that you work for.

Legal requirements are Risk and COSHH assessments along with a company H&S policy if you employ more than 5 people.

Method statements aren’t a legal requirement but are a must for most principal contractors, and various other documents such as a lone workers policy are usually at the behest of an organisations with an approved supplier list.

The H&S documents we supply in this package are risk assessments, method statements and COSHH assessments. We don’t include a company H&S policy, as this is a stand alone document about your company and its approach to H&S and not about a specific job your carrying out or tendering for.

Training staff is essential. We’re not talking about college or apprenticeships but about instructions that are relevant to a task in hand. If a trades person doesn’t know they should isolate a supply before cutting through a gas pipe a dangerous situation could be created.

The same is true if a person is working off ladders and hasn’t been instructed or trained on their safe use. An accident waiting to happen can be an accident avoided by giving staff instruction and basic training.

Communication and instruction on new working practices need to be given to the relevant trades before they carry out a task so that they are aware of new practices and the reason they were introduced.

Training comes in many forms and can be a sit down chat, a tool box talk, a training video, an online course, hand out fliers or a visiting training provider. What’s important is getting new and relevant information across to the workforce before they carry out a task, and keeping a record of the training.
