Slips, trips, and falls represent a significant category of accidents that occur when an individual loses their balance, often culminating in a fall. A slip typically arises when there is an insufficient level of friction or traction between the sole of a person's footwear and the walking surface below, causing them to slide uncontrollably. Common scenarios that lead to slips include navigating wet or icy surfaces, encountering spilt liquids, or traversing areas with mud or debris.

Conversely, a trip occurs when a person's foot collides with or becomes ensnared by an object in their path, leading to a sudden loss of balance. Typical trip hazards comprise uneven flooring, loose carpets, protruding objects, dropped items, or cluttered walkways that impede safe movement. These scenarios can catch an individual off guard, often leading to falls.

A fall is characterised as the unrecovered loss of balance, which may stem from either a slip or a trip, or other contributory factors such as misstepping on stairs, surmounting thresholds, or overreaching to retrieve an object. Falls that occur on the same level, where the individual does not descend from an elevation, are frequently categorised under slips and trips, as they transpire on flat surfaces without variations in inclination. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for mitigating risks and implementing safety measures to prevent such accidents in various environments.
