We can’t get away from risks at, or away from work. The A&E department at any hospital is never empty regardless of the time of day, there’s always someone who’s hada fall or another type of accident that requires treatment.
Unfortunately by the very nature of the work carried out, construction is a high risk industry with over 50,000 injuries reported every year and an average of 30 fatalities. It must be remembered that the accident rate is far higher than the injury rate, because not all accidents cause injury, and often minor injuries, such as bruising or a paper cut aren’t reported. Additionally, it’s good to reflect on how many accidents are prevented due to the current health and safety measures in place.
Falls from height account for approximately half of all fatalities and a break down of the 50,000 non-fatal injuries are:

What health and safety does a building company need?
Due to the amount of injuries within the construction industry there are many Acts and regulations in place that need to be adhered to. Alongside these a building company also needs their own H&S documents that state how they are going manage, reduce or protect against risk. Building companies have a duty of care to protect the people they employ and anybody else who may be affected by works being carried out. This protection is usually in the form of safe working practices which are set out in risk assessments and method statements. Essentially a risk assessment is what its name implies, a document to assess the risks involved in a specific task. Then once the risks have been identified, control measures are put in place to control or limit the risks.
As an example: A large truck reversing might be at risk of reversing into a person. The safest control measure in this case is to stop the truck from reversing and completely eliminate the risk. Unfortunately this can’t happen so to reduce the risk a rear view camera can be fitted and an audible warning system put in place. The control measures create safe working practices when reversing the truck.
An accompanying method statement might inform the driver of any site traffic management plans and that the camera and audible warning must be working before reversing the vehicle. The method statement would also mention that if the control measures fail, a banksman should be employed.
A building companies H&S documents should also include a company health and safety policy as well as COSHH assessments that show how to deal with substances that are hazardous to health.
