MAPP Gas COSHH Assessment Form

A three-page COSHH Assessment Form, with some example text reading:
Health risks: In high concentrations may cause asphyxiation. Symptoms may include loss of mobility/consciousness. Victims may not be aware of asphyxiation.
Skin contact: Contact with evaporating liquid may cause frostbite or freezing of skin. In case of frostbite, spray with water for at least 15 minutes.
Eye contact: There may be irritation and redness. The eyes may water profusely.
Ingestion: Ingestion is not considered a potential route of exposure.
Inhalation: There may be irritation of the throat, tightness in the chest, drowsiness, and dizziness.
MAPP gas, an acronym for Methyl Acetylene-Propadiene Propane, is a specialised fuel gas mixture predominantly utilised in the processes of brazing and soldering. This gas mixture is notable for its elevated flame temperature, which can reach up to 2700°C, significantly surpassing the temperatures achieved with propane. The high heat output of MAPP gas enables quicker and more efficient metal joining, making it an invaluable resource in various metalworking applications.
Originally developed and trademarked by Union Carbide, the classical formulation of MAPP gas is no longer produced in North America, yet the term has evolved into a generic descriptor for fuel gas blends with comparable compositions, such as Map-Pro—a modern mixture that typically includes a combination of propylene and propane.
MAPP gas is favoured in the metalworking industry for tasks necessitating considerable heat, such as brazing, soldering, cutting, welding, and heat treatment. Its unique properties allow for a greater control over the flame characteristics, which is essential for precision work. The versatility of MAPP gas extends beyond just metal joining; it is also employed in various heating applications, making it an essential tool for professionals in fabrication and repair industries who require high-performance fuel for their tasks.
