Disinfectant COSHH Assessment Form

A three-page COSHH Assessment Form for Disinfectant, with some example text reading:
Spillage and environmental:
Mobility: Store upright and ensure the container is tightly closed.
Accidental release: Do not discharge into drains or rivers. Contain the spillage using bunding, then absorb it into dry earth or sand. Use the appropriate method to transfer to a closable, labelled salvage container for disposal.
Disinfectants play a vital role in public health by targeting and eliminating harmful microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses on non-living surfaces. Their effective use is essential for minimising the risk of infections across various settings, including healthcare facilities, food service operations, and domestic environments.
Disinfectants are formulated with chemical compounds designed to kill or inactivate various pathogens. These compounds interact with microbial cell structures, disrupting their functions and ultimately leading to cell death or incapacitation.
These agents significantly reduce the prevalence of infectious diseases by systematically disinfecting surfaces. This is particularly crucial in environments where vulnerable populations, such as hospital patients or residents in care facilities, may be at heightened risk for infection transmission.
Disinfectants are exclusively intended for application on non-porous, non-living surfaces, including but not limited to countertops, floors, tables, utensils, and medical equipment. Their efficacy is optimised for these surfaces, ensuring thorough microbial eradication.
It is important to note that disinfectants are unsafe for skin or mucous membranes. Misusing them on the skin can lead to irritation, allergic reactions, or other health issues. Specific antiseptics or hand sanitisers designed for skin disinfection should be used.
