If you’re new to the world of H&S of haven’t seen a COSHH Assessment Example before, it’s worth looking at each area in more detail to get a better understanding of what’s expected.

The first things that are written on the COSHH Assessment Example are your details followed by the projects details and then the product or substance that is been assessed.

The address and phone number of the supplier or manufacturer including their out of hours emergency phone number should be included followed by the ingredients of the product and the work exposure limit if applicable.

Next you will need to write how and where the product’s been used, followed by the products state and hazard levels.

Using the latest international pictograms, you can see the COSHH Assessment Example has selected ‘Health hazard / irritant’. Cement is also corrosive, but the information that you use when writing a COSHH Assessment comes from the manufacturers product data sheets and in this case, they don’t deem the corrosiveness of cement to be significant.

When you write a COSHH Assessment for concrete, the corrosiveness of the substance changes as cement is no longer a solid and its corrosiveness increases as it begins to hydrate with silicates and water.  What’s important to note is that it’s not the cement that becomes more corrosive, but the reaction of cement with silicates and water. So, the corrosive substance would be concrete and not cement.

The COSHH Assessment Example then shows what PPE to use and the health risks, followed by first aid, environmental and fire details.

The final section is where you put your name, date and signature.
