Risks encountered in the cleaning industry
The risks of same level slips, trips and falls is one of the most prevalent hazards for cleaners, especially with trailing leads and wet floors, and the fact that a cleaner often moves about as they work but may focus on the area they’re cleaning and not the floor surface, which can compound the issue.
Falls from height are another risk and common accidents come from side loading stepladders, over reaching on access equipment, using ladders or steps on a wet floor and not maintaining a three point contact with the access equipment.
As well as the physical hazards there are biological hazards stemming from human waste products, mould and fungi and chemical hazard from the cleaning agents used and sometimes hazards from what is being cleaned.
The correct PPE is essential for cleaners in order to create a barrier between their skin and the products used.
What H&S does a cleaning company need?
Every company needs H&S that assesses risks and introduces control measures to eliminate risk or reduce it to an acceptable level. Cleaning companies are no exception and as a general rule will need a company H&S policy if there are 5 or more employees, risk assessments for the relevant tasks, method statements showing safe working practices and COSHH assessments for chemicals and substances that staff come into contact with.
This RAMS package contains risk assessments, method statements and COSHH assessments. It doesn’t include a company H&S policy because the policy is not relevant to any specific task that employees will carry out. Instead a company H&S policy sets out in general terms how the company deals with and addresses health and safety at the workplace.
If you are looking to become an approved supplier or work on CDM sites you may find that more documentation is needed at the principle contractors behest. Examples of these may include lone worker policies, equality and diversity statements, staff training records or anti-slavery policies.
Training staff is an essential part of keeping employees safe. Imagine the reaction of a young parent if they saw their child running towards a lake that was covered with a thin layer of ice. Without the knowledge that the ice is thin the child doesn’t realise the danger, they just see something that looks fun. If the parent catches up with the child and as a training exercise, throws a stone that breaks the ice the child will begin to understand the dangers.
Staff training doesn’t always have to be grand commitments involving colleges and outside training providers. Sometimes it’s just about imparting the right knowledge to the right person.
A key point to remember is that if a company has assessed a task for hazards and found that there are risks that can be eliminated or lowered by implementing control measures, the person carrying out the task must be made aware of the new working practices before they start the task. In short, staff must be made aware of new working practices and any hazards that may effect their health, safety or wellbeing.
