Course format: Three video training modules, with a multiple-choice section at the
end of each module.
Entry Requirements: Anyone can complete this First Aid Basics Course, whether they have previous experience or not.
The course is a three-module awareness course.
- Module 1 explains why workplace first aid is important and outlines employers’ responsibilities under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. It covers first-aid needs assessments, accident recording, RIDDOR, the first aider’s role, hygiene, PPE, preventing cross-contamination and first-aid-kit contents.
- Module 2 covers managing an incident. It introduces the CLAP scene survey—control, look, assess and protect—and the primary DRSABCD assessment: danger, response, shout for help, airway, breathing, CPR and defibrillation. It also discusses the recovery position, patient consent, communication, confidentiality and the AMPLE secondary survey.
- Module 3 presents practical responses to common injuries and emergencies. These include bleeding, wound cleaning, bandaging, burns, eye and head injuries, unconsciousness, CPR, fractures, crush injuries, choking, drowning, temperature-related illness, seizures, anaphylaxis, bites, stings and abdominal trauma.
The main message is that first aiders should remain calm, make the area safe, identify life-threatening conditions, call professional assistance promptly, work within their training and accurately record what happened.
