What Should Be Included In Basic Fire Safety Awareness Training?

Fire safety awareness training is essential in helping employees understand how to prevent fires, spot hazards, and respond appropriately in emergencies. This training provides everyone with the knowledge and skills needed to create a safer workplace and reduce the chances of fire incidents.

Important Parts of the Training Include:

  • Keeping Things Tidy: It's important for employees to learn how to maintain a clean work area. This includes safely storing flammable materials, keeping pathways clear, and regularly disposing of waste to reduce fire risks.
  • Spotting Hazards: Staff should be trained to identify potential fire hazards, such as damaged electrical equipment, flammable liquids, improperly stored materials, and environmental factors that may increase fire risk.
  • Smoking Rules: Employees must know and follow the designated smoking areas to prevent accidental fires caused by lit cigarettes.
  • Electrical Safety: Training should emphasise turning off electrical devices when not in use, reporting any problems immediately, and having regular inspections of electrical systems to prevent overheating or short circuits.

Emergency Plans & Evacuation:

  • Responding to Emergencies: Employees should know what to do if they discover a fire or hear an alarm. Training should teach them to stay calm, let others know, and follow the emergency procedures.
  • Knowing Escape Routes: Everyone should familiarise themselves with all escape routes and clearly marked fire exits, as well as where to gather after evacuating.
  • Assistance for Those in Need: Training should include guidance on supporting individuals who may need extra support during an emergency, such as those with disabilities or health conditions.
  • Importance of Fire Drills: Regular fire drills are crucial for keeping everyone prepared and able to act quickly in the event of a fire. These drills should happen at least once a year and mimic real-life situations.

Understanding Fire Risks:

  • What is the Fire Triangle? Everyone should learn about the fire triangle, which has three key elements: heat, fuel, and oxygen. Removing any one of these can help prevent fires.
  • Dangers of Smoke and Fire: Participants should understand the dangers of smoke inhalation and burns from flames, as well as the potential health risks.
  • Different Types of Fires: Employees should know about various types of fires (like those caused by paper, liquids, electrical issues, metal, or cooking) and how to respond to each situation.

Knowing About Fire Equipment:

Using Fire Extinguishers: Workers should receive practical training in properly using fire extinguishers, including the PASS method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep). They should also check extinguishers to ensure they’re in good working order.

Fire Blankets: Employees should understand when and how to use fire blankets to safely handle small fires, especially those involving clothing or minor cooking accidents.

Roles & Responsibilities

Fire Wardens: Certain employees will be appointed as fire wardens. Their job is to lead everyone to safety in the event of a fire and to ensure everyone is accounted for during an emergency.
