How Many Fire Marshals Do I Need?

In the United Kingdom, there are no strict laws that say how many fire marshals a workplace must have. However, it's very important to have enough fire marshals based on a careful assessment of the building's fire risks. This assessment examines various factors to determine how many fire marshals are needed to keep everyone safe in an emergency.

Here are some general guidelines for deciding how many fire marshals are needed based on the level of risk at the workplace:

  • Low-Risk Areas: For places like offices and retail shops, it’s recommended to have one fire marshal for every 50 employees.
  • Medium-Risk Areas: In general workplaces, like many offices, it’s advised to have one fire marshal for every 20 employees.
  • High-Risk Areas: Places like kitchens, factories, and care homes require more fire marshals, with a recommended ratio of 1 marshal for every 15 employees.

Important Factors to Consider:

  • Risk Level: The type of work and materials in the building determines how many fire marshals are needed. Areas with greater potential hazards require more marshals due to a higher fire risk.
  • Building Layout: The design of the building affects how many fire marshals you should have. Tall or complex buildings with many exits may need more marshals to ensure safe evacuations.
  • Cover for Absences: It’s crucial to ensure there are enough marshals, even when some are absent due to illness or vacation. Having backup marshals trained to step in ensures safety at all times.

Staff to Marshal Ratios:

  • Low Risk (Offices, Retail): 1 fire marshal for every 50 staff
  • Medium Risk (General Workplaces): 1 fire marshal for every 20 employees.
  • High Risk (Factories, Care Homes): 1 fire marshal for every 15 staff.

Scenarios:

  • Small Business (Fewer than 20 Staff): It's a good idea to have at least 2 trained fire marshals to ensure there’s coverage if one is away.
  • Medium to Large Office: Having at least one fire marshal on each floor is recommended, with one for every 25 to 40 employees to ensure safety and quick responses if needed.

Additionally, there is usually a "Responsible Person" in the organisation who is responsible for carrying out the fire risk assessment and ensuring compliance with safety rules. This person plays a key role in keeping the workplace safe by regularly checking and updating the number of fire marshals as necessary.
