How Far Should A Ladder Extend Above The Landing Point?

When using a ladder to reach a high place, it's important that the ladder goes at least 1 meter (about 3 feet or 3 to 4 rungs) above the spot where you’ll be getting off. This extra height helps you have a solid grip when you step off the ladder, making it safer and more stable.

Here are some key safety tips for using ladders

  • Good Handholds: The 1-meter extension is essential because it provides a secure grip on the ladder's extended section. This helps reduce the risk of falling when you're getting on or off the ladder by giving you three-point contact.
  • Fixed Ladders: If you’re using a fixed ladder, which is a ladder that stays in one place, it also needs to follow this height guideline. The vertical parts of the ladder must reach up to any safety guardrails that may be in place, ensuring you have support as you climb.
  • Avoid Top Rungs: It's also important not to stand on the top three rungs of a ladder. This section of the ladder is intended only for hand grip to enable safe three-point contact.
  • Securing the Ladder: Make sure the ladder is properly secured to prevent it from slipping. You can do this by tying it off at the top or using a special device that helps keep it in place. A well-secured ladder is much safer to climb.
