How Do I Identify Signs Of Slavery?

Modern slavery is a serious issue that violates basic human rights, yet it often happens unnoticed around us. Knowing how to spot the signs can help us identify and support potential victims. Here are some important signs to watch for:

  • Physical Signs: Victims may look unwell, with signs of hunger, poor hygiene, or neglect. Pay attention to people who have untreated injuries, look very tired, or show marks of abuse.
  • Isolation: Many victims are kept in one place and aren’t allowed to leave without someone watching them. They might live in secluded conditions, under the control of someone who restricts their movement and with whom they can interact.
  • Lack of Personal Documents: If someone doesn’t have access to their identification documents, such as a passport or ID, this could be a warning sign. This lack of documents makes it hard for them to move freely or ask for help.
  • Behaviour Changes: Victims often seem scared or anxious. They might avoid eye contact, especially with authority figures, and could hide their feelings to avoid drawing attention.
  • Poor Living Conditions: Those trapped in modern slavery often live in terrible conditions, such as crowded or dirty places. They may work where they live and typically have no control over their money.
  • Strange Work Hours: If you notice someone being driven to or from work at odd times or in groups, it might indicate they are being exploited, as they are often moved around to stay hidden.
  • Dependence on Others: Victims may rely heavily on their employers or someone they call a “friend” for communication. This person often speaks for them, helping to keep them isolated and under control.
