Find a Provider of Editable Method Statement Templates for UK Construction Projects

Finding a template for an editable method statement is fairly straightforward, as it is a simple document that details a safe, step-by-step procedure for managing hazards during specific tasks.

Although the method statement explains how to complete a task, it does not have to be incredibly detailed. This statement may seem contrite, but the presumption is that the person performing a task is trained to do it.

You would not give a young person fresh out of school a method statement to hang a door or plaster a wall and expect them to carry out the task. Also, in many instances, there is already a documented method statement for carrying out a task such as fitting a mortice lock in a door. These method statements, also known as manufacturers' instructions, are often detailed pictorial explanations of how to fit a lock or perform another task.

So, for hanging a door, we can say fit the lock as per the manufacturer's instructions, without adding any further details about the technical task at hand. But we still need to add instructions to fit the lock, following a safe system of work that ensures neither the worker nor others are harmed by the task.

Imagine that the door is hung and can swing freely as the carpenter tries to chisel out the mortise hole for the lock. This would not be a safe system of work as the door can swing freely while the carpenter is trying to hack away with a razor-sharp chisel.

A simple fix is to state: “Before fitting the lock, secure the door in a fixed position by using a wedge under the opening stile of the door to prevent the door from swinging, then fit the lock as per the manufacturer's instructions.”

So the method statement never tells the carpenter how to fit the lock; instead, it tells them how to carry out the task safely.

In effect, a method statement is a safe system of work for carrying out a task that someone is trained to do.
