Everything About the Level 1 Food Hygiene Certificate Explained

The Level 1 Food Hygiene Certificate introduces individuals to the basic principles of food safety, helping them understand the importance of maintaining a hygienic environment in food-related settings. This entry-level certification equips learners with the knowledge to identify potential risks and implement simple yet effective practices to minimise hazards.

On successful completion of the training, which usually takes around 2 hours, candidates receive a certificate confirming they have received adequate training.

Who needs a Level 1 Food Hygiene Certificate?

Chefs and cooks of all levels require Level 2 training!

Level 1 food hygiene training is designed for people who work in kitchens, bars, food warehouses, food shops, and as delivery drivers, among others. For example, a kitchen porter doesn’t cook food, but they still need to know the risks of cross-contamination, correct waste disposal and pest infestations.

Additionally, this certification is valuable for bar staff and others in the hospitality industry who handle beverages, snacks, or utensils, as they need to understand basic hygiene principles to maintain sanitary conditions in their work environments.

The training is also ideal for volunteers or part-time staff who assist in community food projects, school kitchens, or catering events. It provides them with the essential knowledge to meet safety standards, ensuring that their work aligns with industry expectations.

The training is ideal for:

  • Front-of-house staff in restaurants, cafes, or retail environments.
  • Supermarket shelf stockers or delivery personnel.
  • Warehouse staff involved in storing or transporting food items.
  • Volunteers in charity kitchens, community centres, or food banks.
  • Anyone who requires a basic understanding of food hygiene but does not directly prepare or cook food.
  • Those considering a career in the food industry and seeking foundational knowledge.
