Sand COSHH Assessment Form

Sand

A three-page COSHH Assessment Form for sand, with some sample text reading:

Health risks: Cancer hazard. It may cause eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation.

Skin contact: Dust may cause mechanical irritation.

Eye contact: Dust may cause mechanical irritation. The eyes may water profusely.

Ingestion: Dust is irritating to the respiratory tract.

Inhalation: Dust is irritating to the respiratory tract. It may cause cancer in humans. Prolonged exposure to respirable crystalline quartz may cause delayed lung injury/fibrosis (silicosis).

Sand is a granular material made up of finely divided mineral particles, and its composition is shaped by its geological origins. It is defined explicitly by its grain size, which typically ranges from 0.0625 mm to 2 mm in diameter. This size class places sand between gravel, which has larger particles, and silt, which has smaller particles. Furthermore, sand is recognised as a textural soil category when more than 85 per cent of its particles fall within this sand-sized range.

The local geology and the environmental conditions present during its formation and deposition significantly influence sand composition. In inland continental regions and non-tropical coastal areas, the primary component of sand is silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO2). This usually appears in quartz, a durable variant of silica that is chemically inert and resistant to weathering, allowing it to maintain a prominent presence in diverse environments. The diversity of sand compositions is also shaped by the source rocks and the processes of erosion and deposition, which can introduce other minerals such as feldspar, mica, and volcanic ash, depending on the geographical location.
