Crystalline silica is a naturally occurring mineral primarily composed of silicon dioxide (Sio2), characterised by its distinct crystalline structure. This mineral is predominantly found in a variety of geological formations, including igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, as well as in different types of soil and sand. During industrial processes such as cutting, grinding, drilling, and blasting, crystalline silica can become airborne as fine dust, presenting health risks to workers and nearby communities.

The most prevalent form of crystalline silica is quartz, which is not only abundant in the Earth's crust but also highly durable and chemically inert. Exposure to respirable crystalline silica poses serious health hazards, including silicosis, lung cancer, and other respiratory diseases. Consequently, understanding its sources, behaviour in the environment, and associated risks is crucial for implementing effective safety measures and regulations in workplaces where silica dust may be generated.
