How Long Should You Check For Breathing?

When you come across someone who isn’t responding, it’s essential to check quickly whether they’re breathing. You should do this within 10 seconds. One effective way to check for breathing is by using the "look, listen, and feel" method. This helps you see whether they are breathing normally or in trouble.

Steps to Check for Breathing (Do This in 10 Seconds)

  • Look: Stand beside the person and face them. Watch their chest closely to see if it’s rising and falling. This movement is a sign they might be breathing normally.
  • Listen: Lean in a bit closer to their mouth and nose. Listen carefully for any breathing sounds. Regular breaths are a good sign, while strange or irregular sounds might mean something is wrong.
  • Feel: You can also hold your cheek close to their mouth and nose to feel for any airflow. A normal breath will create a slight movement of air against your skin.

Important Things to Remember

  • Agonal Gasps: Sometimes, you might notice shallow, irregular breaths called agonal gasps. These are not normal breathing and indicate a serious emergency. If you see these, it’s important to start CPR right away.
  • Clear the Airway: Before checking for breathing, ensure the person’s airway is clear. You can gently tilt their head back and lift their chin. This position helps open up the airway, making it easier to check for breathing.
  • Act Quickly: If you’re unsure whether the person is breathing normally after 10 seconds or if you notice anything unusual, don’t wait—start CPR immediately. Acting quickly can really help save their life.
  • Always remember to call for emergency help if you think someone is unresponsive and not breathing as they should. Your quick actions can significantly improve their chances of recovery.
