Method Statement Example - How to remove a bathroom suite

This free Method Statement Example not only shows the quality of our work, but helps you understand what is required and ultimately, shows you how to write Method Statements.

If you’ve never written a method statement before, don’t worry, use this free example in conjunction with the video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoDlEutMU0k , If you want to download a free method statement template here's the link.

Following the free method statement example you will see that the fist lines of text cover:

  • The document type, in this case a method statement. Followed by who needs to read the document, which could be all staff, all manual staff, or in this case plumbers. The final part of the first line is to describe the task that the method statement relates to, in this case it's removing a bathroom suite.
  • Following on from the title is a section titled 'prepared by'. I always advise that this is the company or trading name and not the name of an individual. One of the reasons for this is that method statements evolve. John might write the initial document, but then Martha, Jean and Sam may edit and amend it as required over the following years.
  • The final section at the top of this free method statement example, simply says 'for'. The information to include here is the client or customer.  Although the document has been prepared to inform your own staff how to carry out a task correctly and safely all method statements must be site specific. If the task is to be carried out in your office or premises, enter your own details here. If the task is to carried out in someone else's premises or site, enter their details.

Once the top section has been filled in it's time to create an index which shows the order tasks are to be carried out in. In this case the index is called 'scope of works' and as you can see from the image below, there are six elements listed and their are no instructions telling people how to carry out any of the tasks in the list.

After the scope of works this free example and other method statements describe the work process in order, with consideration to controlling hazards that have been identified as specific to the task in hand. As an example, if we look at item 2 we see the following text:

You can see from the above description how simple the descriptions of the task are, and simplicity is the key to a successful method statement. Think of the pictorial diagrams you get with flat pack furniture. This is probably the simplest was of overcoming all language barriers and still telling people the method for assembling the furniture. Another example might be a carpenter hanging a door that has three locks. The method for fitting each of the locks would simply be 'Fit as per manufacturers instructions'. There is no need to duplicate the fitting instructions, and no need to include them in a method statement.

Finally at the end of this free method statement example is the section to add your name, sign and date the document to say that you are happy to submit it to contractors and employees as required.

We do hope that this tutorial helped.
